Fabric Requirements and Cutting
NOTE
Some of the pieces in this block are cut using templates from Pattern 2. The dimensions listed in the chart under “Size to Cut” represent the amount of fabric required for each piece. More fabric may be required for shortcut piecing or fussy cutting.
To make a template from a pattern, refer to Making and Using Freezer-Paper Templates. When cutting your fabric, remember to add seam allowances and mark points for matching seams.
Make the Block
Make the Hourglass Unit
1. Sew together piece A1 and piece A2. Repeat with the remaining pieces A1 and A2.
2. Sew the pairs together to create the 4½˝ × 4½˝ hourglass unit. figure a
Make the Vertical Stripe
1. Sew piece B to the top of the hourglass unit.
2. Sew piece C to the bottom of the hourglass unit.
Finish the Block
1. Sew piece D to the left side of the block.
2. Sew piece E to the right side of the block. figure b
