Fabric Requirements and Cutting
NOTE
Most of the pieces in this block are cut using templates from Pattern 40. The dimensions listed in the chart under “Size to Cut” represent the amount of fabric required for each piece. More fabric may be required for shortcut piecing or fussy cutting.
To make a template from a pattern, refer to Making and Using Freezer-Paper Templates. When cutting your fabric, remember to add seam allowances and mark points for matching seams.
Make the Block
Make the Hourglass Units
1. Sew together a piece A1 and a piece A2.
2. Sew together a piece A3 and a piece A4.
3. Sew together units A1A2 and A3A4 to make an hourglass unit A, 4˝ × 4˝. Repeat Steps 1–3 to make a total of 3 hourglass units. figure a
Make the Rows
1. Sew a piece C to the left side of an hourglass unit to make row 1.
2. Sew a piece C to the right side of an hourglass unit to make row 2.
3. Sew a piece C to the left side of piece B to make row 3.
4. Sew the remaining piece C to the right side of the remaining hourglass unit to make row 4.
Finish the Block
Sew together the 4 rows. figure b
