York’s centre for positive living
Metatronic healing. Ashtanga and vinyasa flow yoga. Matrix reimprinting. Psychosynthesis counselling. Gongsphere sound baths. Craniosacral therapy. No, we’re not sure what all of these are either, but they are definitely good for you, and they are all available at Millers Yard.
A multitude of fascinating classes and workshops takes place at Millers Yard, yet much of the city rushing by on Gillygate has no idea it exists. A health, education, and training centre dedicated to all aspects of positive living, the yard is home to complementary therapists, health and fitness classes, and training courses. There are also some meeting rooms and conference facilities that are defiantly non-corporate.

The underlying ethos at Millers Yard is a holistic approach to wellbeing. To that end there are specialists performing physical treatments, such as acupuncture and reflexology, and others offering healing for the mind, through cognitive behavioural therapy or meditation. A coffee bar with an emphasis on organic produce helps to ensure healthy nourishment. Family-friendly fitness classes are available for all ages, from baby ballet to a classic legs, bums, and tums class. And good old-fashioned fun plays its part: the yard has hosted a vintage jukebox choir and regularly stages live music gigs.
This has long been an alternative corner of York. It was home to the Gillygate Wholefood Bakery, a workers’ cooperative which operated between 1982 and 1996. A review of the Millers Yard Café back then described how the author’s friends “were wildly enthusiastic about the tofu cheesecake.”
A plaque on a bench in the yard bears a quote from resident Tom Mason, who died in 2006. It captures the essence of the Millers Yard philosophy: “I have taught myself to take note of and pleasure in those works with which the creator has crowded and adorned the paths I daily walk and cycle.”
