Hot dogs were often suggested for party fare during the war. This idea from a May 1942 beer advertisement was so cleverly promoted that I just couldn’t resist including it. Here’s what they promised: “After the card game, you’ll be the ‘toast of the stag line’ when you trump their hearts with this snack. Quick, easy, thrifty … an irresistible blend of manly fare and foaming Pabst Blue Ribbon.”
8 extra-large frankfurters
4 slices American cheese
8 strips bacon
8 hot dog rolls, toasted
Preheat broiler. Slit hot dogs lengthwise; cut each cheese slice into 4 strips; place 2 in each hot dog. Wrap bacon tightly around hot dogs and place on broiler pan with slit down.
Broil, turning hot dogs until bacon is well done on all sides. Serve in toasted rolls.
