The categories here (Figure 5-3) all apply to your free 7-gigabyte online SkyDrive (Accounts):
File Storage. How much of your free space have you used up—and would you like to buy more? Here, too, is the “Save documents to SkyDrive by default” switch; it means that whenever you save a new document, Windows 8.1 will attempt to save it online instead of to your PC.
Camera Roll. Would you like Windows to store new photos and videos on your SkyDrive? If so, (a) you’ll be able to access them from any phone, tablet, or computer with the SkyDrive app, and (b) you’ll conserve storage on your Windows 8 machine. Here are the on/off switches. One of them, “Upload photos at good quality,” creates smaller but lower-quality versions of your photos—good for sharing, perhaps, but don’t entrust your originals to this.
Sync settings. If you log into your computer using an online Microsoft account, as described in Chapter 24, you get a delicious perk: Your settings, passwords, browser favorites, and other preferences magically appear on any Windows 8 machine you use. (Or at least any machine you sign into with that Microsoft name and password.) They’re all synchronized over an Internet connection.
This panel gives you individual on/off switches for the data you want to synchronize in this way. For details, see Chapter 24.
Metered connections means “cellular tablets for which you pay by the megabyte for using the Internet.” If you didn’t have these on/off switches, your tablet could rack up enormous bills by syncing big files or settings with your SkyDrive without your even being aware of it.
