The Status bar does one more thing for you: It launches the Quick Settings screen, which lets you fiddle with the NOOK’s most important settings. Tap the right-hand side of the Status bar, and the Quick Settings screen launches. The screen has these five options:
Battery. Shows how much battery life you’ve got left. If the NOOK is charging, you see the word “Charging” beneath it, and if the NOOK isn’t plugged in you’ll see the word “Discharging.”
WiFi. This toggle switch tells you whether WiFi is turned on or off. Tap the switch to turn it on—or off if it’s already turned on. The toggle appears green when it’s turned on. If you’re connected to a WiFi network, its name appears here as well.
Mute. Turn on this checkbox to mute all sounds except for music, video and other audible media.
Auto-rotate screen. When this box is turned on, the NOOK’s screen orientation changes to either horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait). You can see this behavior when you’re reading some magazines, or browsing the Web. If you don’t like this behavior, tap to uncheck the green box.
Brightness. Tap, and a slider appears that lets you change the brightness of your screen.
To make the Quick Settings screen go away, tap anywhere outside it. And if you want to change even more settings—literally every single one on your NOOK—tap the little gear icon on the upper right of the Quick Settings screen. (See Chapter 16 to learn how to change all the NOOK’s settings.)
