AMONG YOUR NOOK TABLET’S many tricks is its ability to keep track of all your contacts, including family, friends, coworkers, and anyone else you want to keep in touch with.
While having your contacts on your NOOK Tablet is certainly a useful feature, there’s a more important reason for having them in your NOOK—your Contacts list integrates with NOOK Friends (Chapter 14), Facebook (Linking Your NOOK Tablet to Facebook), and email. So even if you don’t plan to use your NOOK Tablet’s Contacts app on its own, it pays to know how to use it for all those features. Whatever your reason, this chapter tells you everything you need to know about contacts on the NOOK.
First things first: To launch the Contacts app, press the NOOK button, tap Apps, and then tap Contacts. If you prefer, tap the Media bar, and then tap Contacts from your list of apps.
When you first launch the app, it’s a bare, empty thing. But if you use Gmail or Google Contacts, there’s good news for you—you can easily import them directly into your NOOK’s Contacts app. Not only that, but those contacts also sync automatically. So when you add a new contact on your NOOK, for example, it shows up in Gmail and your Google contacts, and when you add a new contact in Google, it shows up on your NOOK.
It’s simple to import them and keep them in sync. Here’s how to set it up:
Connect to a WiFi network.
Press the NOOK button and select Settings→Social→“Manage your Accounts.”
From the Social settings screen that appears, in the Google section, tap Link Your Account.
On the screen that appears, type your Google account email address and password. If you’re a Gmail user, it’s your Gmail address and password. Then tap Sign In.
On the next screen, tap “Grant access.” If you instead tap “Deny access,” your contacts won’t be imported.
You go back to the Social settings screen, with an indication that you’ve logged into Google.
There’s another way to import your Google contacts into your NOOK. Launch the Contacts app, and then select Google Contacts from the drop-down menu. From the screen that appears, select Set Up Account. You’re prompted to enter your Google account email address and password, as in the steps in this section. From here on in, you’ll follow those same steps to complete importing the contacts.
Your contacts start to be imported into the NOOK Contacts app. It may take several minutes for all of them to be imported. To see your contacts, from the Apps screen, tap Contacts, and from the drop-down menu that appears, tap Google Contacts. They’ll be there, in all their glory. And they’ll automatically sync as well.
If you decide at any point that you don’t want to use your Google Contacts on your NOOK, first get back to the Social settings screen by pressing the NOOK button and selecting select Settings→Social→“Manage your Accounts.” Then in the Google area, tap Unlink Your Account. When you do this, you delete all your Google contacts from your NOOK. It’s easy to get them back again; just follow the directions for linking your account.
