34_The Horizon Plaza

Bargain hunting in an old factory building

Back

Next

Completely unspectacular! That’s Horizon Plaza on the south side of Ap Lei Chau, and from the outside you cannot possibly imagine the mercantile mecca that lies behind those walls. If you need new furniture, want to redecorate, or are looking for antiques, designer clothes or good wine, you’ll find them on one of the 28 storeys of this old industrial building. The Ferrari car service centre has moved out, but an increasing number of outlet shops such as Armani or Lane Crawford have moved in. Horizon Plaza clearly isn’t a glittering shopping mall, but for those who still remember the dingy old stairwell, let it be said that a lot has changed here. Take the lift to the top and then walk down from floor to floor. The escalators are often quite busy, so taking the stairs is the sensible thing to do.

Two dealers in antique furniture very much to be recommended are Birdcage and Oriental Home. The latter also offers very beautiful Asian lamps and furniture made to measure out of antique wood, which can be shipped worldwide for a relatively modest cost.

Ap Lei Chau is the island with the second-highest population density in the world and since 1980 has been connected via a bridge to Hong Kong Island. Before it was relocated to Lamma Island, one of Hong Kong’s main power stations was located on Ap Lei Chau. The basin between Aberdeen Harbour and the island forms a natural typhoon shelter, and this is the reason why Aberdeen is one of the oldest harbours in Hong Kong, where today about 5,000 people still live and work on their boats. It’s possible to do a short tour around Aberdeen Harbour with the Jumbo Kingdom Restaurant shuttle boat for free. A small ferry also runs between Aberdeen Promenade and the Ap Lei Chau Waterfront. From there it’s best to take the bus or a taxi to Horizon Plaza, as the hilly terrain makes walking quite a challenge.
