The HEXACO Personality Inventory–Revised (HEXACO–PI–R) assesses the six major personality factors discussed in Chapters 3 and 4. In this Appendix, we provide the short (60-item) version of the HEXACO–PI–R in both self-report and observer report forms. At the end of the Appendix, we provide instructions for scoring and interpreting your responses.
On the following pages is a series of statements about you. Please read each statement and decide how much you agree or disagree with that statement, using the following scale. Then write your response in the corresponding space on the answer sheet on page 177. (Write your responses in the spaces next to the numbers, not in the spaces between parentheses.) Please answer every statement, even if you are not completely sure of your response.

Please read each statement and decide how much you agree or disagree with that statement, using the following scale. To obtain accurate scores on the HEXACO–PI–R, please complete all of the steps below very carefully. Any errors may greatly distort your results!
1. Refer to the sheet containing responses to the HEXACO–PI–R (either self- or observer report). For all items WITHOUT an asterisk, please copy the response for each item into the adjacent space (i.e., between parentheses).
2. For all items WITH an asterisk, please recode the response for each item as follows, and then write the recoded response in the adjacent space (i.e., between parentheses).
1 → 5; 2 → 4; 3 → 3; 4 → 2; 5 → 1
3. After all of the spaces between parentheses have been filled appropriately, find the sum of all numbers in each of the six columns. Then recalculate each sum and resolve any errors.
4. These column sums represent your scores on six scales of this personality inventory. The scales, from left to right, are as follows:
Conscientiousness (C)
Agreeableness (A)
Extraversion (X)
Emotionality (E)
Honesty-Humility (H)
5. To understand what these scales actually measure, see the descriptions in Table 3–1. This is important, because the scale names alone are not precise descriptions.
6. Use the following categories to interpret your scores. Note that “above average” is not necessarily better and that “below average” is not necessarily worse; recall the discussions of trade-offs in Chapter 3.
Well above average: |
44 or above |
Somewhat above average: |
36 to 43 |
About average: |
28 to 35 |
Somewhat below average: |
20 to 27 |
Well below average: |
19 or below |
7. Keep in mind that scores on this brief inventory are not perfect indications of personality trait levels. Although the HEXACO–PI–R is a well-validated personality inventory, the scores of any given person on a particular scale might overestimate or underestimate that person’s true level of the personality dimension. For most people, the most accurate information about personality can be gained by considering self-reports in combination with observer reports from people who know that person well.
