The main targets of the body include the following areas.
Hitting the Head
Some parts of the head, such as the cheekbones and nose, can be broken quite easily, and a blow to the nose can also cause incapacitation through pain and involuntary tears. However, the main value in striking at the head is that it can cause ‘brain shake’ which is disorientating at least and can cause unconsciousness.
Hitting the Body
The upper torso and shoulders are well protected by ribs and large muscles, but the sternum, solar plexus and the diaphragm region are vulnerable to blows. From the side or rear the kidneys are a useful target, and in the lower abdomen the bladder and groin can be effectively struck. Most of the torso is not an easy or readily affected target, however.
Hitting the Limbs
The limbs are not ideal targets for striking, although a ‘dead leg’ caused by kneeing the thigh can be very effective in limiting an opponent’s movements. The shins are also surprisingly sensitive and can be kicked with a hard shoe to make the opponent flinch. Kicking the knee backwards or to the side can destroy the joint.
