Remember when we talked about digits on page 63? When we write a number in expanded form, we just take each digit and show how much it stands for! It’s like we’re discovering what’s inside a number and showing everyone how much it’s really worth.
Expanded form:
87 = 80 + 7
456 = 400 + 50 + 6
222 = 200 + 20 + 2
When one of the digits is a zero, then we don’t need to write anything for that place’s value—the 0 stands for nothing! So for 906, instead of writing 906 = 900 + 0 + 6, we can just write 906 = 900 + 6. Make sense?
Writing numbers in expanded form can also help us remember how to say them out loud! After all, we say 456 out loud as “four hundred fifty-six,” right? Check it out:
