13. Much to the point, the Andante actually begins—is literally inscribed—with the upbeat that is the final eighth note of the first movement, and is so written in the first edition of H 150 and in the Michel copy of H 156. The copy of H 157, however, shows without ambiguity that the new tempo begins at the change of meter: establishes, that is, a relationship between the final notes of the Allegro and the opening notes of the Andante. This distinction, critical in understanding how the movements are differently joined, is lost in the Henle edition, where the upbeats in all three sonatas are written prior to the change in tempo. The incipits in E. Eugene Helm Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1989), 39–40, are similarly misleading, omitting the upbeats in H 150 and H 156 altogether.
