This is a shorter variation of Route 73 which provides an attractive option for a gentle day’s walk.
Begin at the Hofalm roadhead as for Route 73, and follow directions to Gasthof Unterhof. Immediately beyond the gasthof take the path/track on the right which rises easily to the little Almsee. Go through a gateway on the left into a meadow, where a faint path takes you in the direction of the Linzer Weg. Soon rising among trees you come to a crossing path by a little wooden bridge. Bear right, and when you arrive at a signed junction turn right on a broad path towards Oberhof (the left branch goes to the Linzer Weg and Hofpürgl Hut).
Descending a little, the path then forks and you branch left, rising towards the southeast. The way narrows and continues to climb, but much steeper now, heading up the hillside with a few zigzags to ease the gradient. Eventually the slope slackens, and an alm building is seen ahead. A sign now directs the path to the right, across a meadow and on to a farm road. Turn left and wander up this to Sulzenalm (the Wallehen Hut, 1608m, accommodation and refreshments) with its lovely view up to the Bischofsmütze.
The descent to Filzmoos begins as for Route 73, as far as the point where path no 638 leaves the forest track. Do not follow this path, but continue down the track which eventually brings you out of the forest near a farm. Ignore the narrow road cutting right (signed Fussweg nach Filzmoos) and remain on the track which soon passes through another belt of forest and leads to the Rettenstein Hut (a ski hut, not open in summer). By now you’re on a narrow tarmac road with views down to Filzmoos. Keep alert for a footpath shortcut that descends steeply through trees and rejoins the road lower down by a gasthof. Wander down the road into Filzmoos.
