Assemble the Block

1. Use the October block instructions (page 80) to make 2 bats, 1 medium pumpkin, 1 tall pumpkin, and 1 “BOO!” pumpkin.

2. To the medium pumpkin, tall pumpkin, and 2 bat blocks:

Sew black print 1˝ × 5⅜˝ strip to the top.

Sew black print 1¼ ˝ × 57⁄8˝ strips to the sides.

Sew black print 2˝ × 67⁄8˝ strip to the bottom.

Sew the black print 1½˝ × 5⅜˝ strip to the top.

Sew the black print 1¾˝ × 6⅜˝ strips to the sides.

Sew the black print 2½˝ × 77⁄8˝ strip to the bottom.

image

4. Place the large banner pattern on the “BOO!” pumpkin block, pin or trace around it, and cut out. Use the small banner pattern to cut shapes for the other 4 flags.

5. Remove the foundations. Line up the top edges of the flags with the interfacing; then apply the interfacing. The ¼˝ seam allowance will extend beyond the interfacing on the side and bottom edges of each flag.

6. Add embroidery details using the October block instructions (page 81).

Assemble the Banner

1. Place each flag and backing fabric piece right sides together. Leaving the top open, sew the sides and bottom curve with a short stitch. Either trim the seam to ⅛˝ using pinking shears or trim and clip the curves. Turn it right side out and press.

2. Pin or use temporary fabric glue to stick the rickrack to the back of each flag so that just the hump section can be seen from the front. Topstitch on the right side of the flag ⅛˝ in from the edge on the sides and bottom curve of the flag.

image

3. Fold the twill tape in half lengthwise and press. Open it up and press under ¼˝ of tape at both ends.

4. Sandwich the large flag within the fold in the center of the tape. Pin or glue it in place. Pin or glue the bats, followed by the pumpkins, on both sides of the center flag, leaving a 2˝ gap between each flag.

5. Sew along the full length of the twill tape to secure the flags in place within the fold.
