★★★ Café Petersborg FREDERIKSSTADEN SMØRREBRØD Open for business since 1746, Café Petersborg was once a favorite with Russian naval officers. The place is full of rickety charm and an equally charming waitstaff. Cafe Wilder CHRISTIANSHAVN FRENCH/ITALIAN Popular with locals, this raucous cafe in a restored Christianshavn canal house can be chaotic in the evenings with cramped tables, loud conversation, and flowing beer. In the calmer daytime, drop by for a lunch of fresh tomatoes and mozzarella on ciabatta or an early evening glass of wine, served under an extraordinary painting of a nude Anita Ekberg. Cap Horn, a longtime favorite on Nyhavn.

★★ Cap Horn NYHAVN SEAFOOD Housed in a 17th-century townhouse overlooking the canal, Cap Horn was an early leader of Copenhagen’s organic revolution. Try the superb fresh langoustines and wild duck dressed with prunes and apple chutney. If it’s crowded inside (it usually is), grab a table under the awnings. ★★★ Era Ora CHRISTIANSHAVN ITALIAN The only Michelin-starred Italian restaurant in Scandinavia, Era-Ora deserves its ranking: The decor is elegant, the terrace overlooks Christianshavn Kanal, and the waiters are charming. The wine list features a range of enticing Italian wines; the light Italian dishes, such as ferretti pasta with mushrooms and veal tenderloin, are simply superb. Reservations required. The owners have another venue well worth checking out: Tuscan home cooking at L’Altro (Torvegade 62,  45 3254 5406). ★★★ Fiskebar KØDBYEN SEAFOOD Like many restaurants in Vesterbro’s trendy Meatpacking District, Fiskebar (“fish bar”) nods to its past with a stripped-down industrial-chic interior; today it’s all about some of the best seafood you’ll find in this city. Opt for a large fish entree or tuck into a few starters at the bar, such as the succulent oysters, creamy seared scallops, or delicate raw mackerel. Look for Fiskebar’s equally impressive sister restaurant, Musling, across from Torvehallerne (p 81). Flæsketorvet 100.  45 3215 5656. www.fiskebaren.dk. Entrees 155DKK–255DKK. AE, DC, MC, V. Geranium’s head chef, Rasmus Kofoed.

★★★ Geranium ØSTERBRO GOURMET ORGANIC Owned by culinary darling Rasmus Kofoed, who was voted the world’s best chef in 2011 (while at Bocuse d’Or), Geranium holds a coveted three Michelin stars; locals tend to prefer it to its showier rival Noma (which closed in late 2016). Reservations essential. The mainly organic menu features the finest crab, lemon sole, or tender venison. The restaurant sits on the 8th floor of Parken football stadium offering knockout views of leafy Østerbro. Per Henrik Lings Allé 4.  45 6996 0020. www.geranium.dk. Tasting menu 1,400 DKK & 1,800DKK. ★★ Grøften TIVOLI DANISH One of Tivoli’s oldest and most venerable restaurants, established in 1874, Grøften (“the ditch”) is decked out with red-checked tablecloths and fairy lights. Smørrebrød classics are served alongside hearty Danish staples such as rolled pork sausage and fried fillet of plaice. It gets a little busy; book ahead. Service is brisk and friendly, and the burgers and steaks are just what you’d expect from this international chain. Sensible prices make this a sure hit with families. ★★★ Heering Restaurant & Bistro NYHAVN SEAFOOD Here’s one of my favorite Nyhavn spots for a leisurely lunch of marinated herring and smørrebrød, piled high with salmon, garlicky mayo, and dill. On sunny days, grab a table under the awning by the street-side bar and order a chilled dark lager. Inside, the cheery dining room has the bare brick walls and uneven floors of a typical 17th-century Nyhavn canal house. Nyhavn 15.  45 3314 5614. restaurantheering.dk. Entrees 185DKK–245DKK. Vietnamese food at Le Le.

★★★ Leonore Christine NYHAVN SEAFOOD In Copenhagen’s oldest building (standing since 1681), this charming Nyhavn restaurant has gently sloping floors, and walls dotted with portraits of Danish kings and queens. By evening candlelight, it’s a very romantic spot. Lunchtime best buys include pickled herrings served with capers and a rich pork pâté smothered with bacon and mushrooms. ★★ Møller Snaps & Smørrebrød NYHAVN SMØRREBRØD There are plenty of places to get lunchtime schnapps and sandwiches around Nyhavn, but Andreas Møller’s place stands out, with his unique take on the classic fried herring, fish fillet. and chicken salad smørrebrød. Chefs come out from the kitchen to tell you all about their dishes, ingredients, and which of their 60 homemade schnapps to pair them with. Toldbodgade 5.  45 3150 5075. www.snapsogsmoerrebroed.dk. Industrial-chic brasserie Pluto.

★★★ Nimb Terrasse TIVOLI GOURMET Part of the vast culinary Nimb empire, this French-inspired Scandinavian bistro sits under a leafy canopy of trees in the heart of Tivoli. The menu’s simple but immaculate dishes center on local harvests and seasons, using many of Nimb’s own herbs and vegetables. Come summer, an outdoor barbecue is fired up on the terrace, grilling catch of the day, beef steaks. and fresh Danish langoustine. Bernstorffsgade 5.  45 3375 0750. www.terrasse.nimb.dk. ★★★ 3291.jpg Peder Oxe LATIN QUARTER DANISH Book in advance for a blow-out dinner at one of Copenhagen’s oldest (and noisiest) restaurants, with what may be the most beautiful waitstaff in the city. In a series of lively dining rooms with wooden floors and tables squeezed in at odd angles, dishes range from organic steak to melt-in-the-mouth sole, accompanied by fresh salads from the buffet. Set it off with Chablis and round off with a selection of tasty Danish cheeses. Gråbrødretorv 11.  45 3311 0077. www.pederoxe.dk. Entrees 145DKK–235DKK. AE, DC, MC, V. Daily 10am–11:30pm. Metro: Kongens Nytorv. Map p 90.

★★ Pluto KONGENS NYTORV BRASSERIE With its concrete pillars and long industrial metal bar, Pluto feels more like a downtown New York hangout than a Danish restaurant. The French-leaning menu features everything from snacks and charcuterie to foie gras, hanger steak, and desserts. This is quality food at palatable prices, plus the bar slams out some mean cocktails. Borgergade 16.  45 3316 0016. www.restaurantpluto.dk. Entrees 95DKK–195DKK. 12 courses 450DKK. AE, DC, MC, V. Mon–Thurs 5:30pm–midnight, Fri–Sat 5:30pm–2am. Metro: Kongens Nytorv. Map p 90.

Renés Brasserie & Restaurant TIVOLI BRASSERIE A well-priced option only a step away from Tivoli (p 10), this French-style brasserie has a zinc-topped bar and a menu of burgers, grills, and fish dishes. Try the lunch plate—herring, fillet of plaice, shrimps, and fried beef tartar—it certainly chased away my hunger pangs. Axel Torv 6.  45 3314 8501. www.renesrestaurant.dk. Entrees 169DKK–249DKK. Restaurant Els NYHAVN DANISH CONTINENTAL This atmospheric candle-lit dining room with Art Nouveau murals has slipped a bit since its 19th-century heyday, but it’s still worth coming here for the Hans Christian Andersen-era ambiance. The lunch menu offers a variety of sandwiches and salads; dinner moves toward steaks and roast chicken. Store Strandstræde 3.  45 3314 1341. www.restaurant-els.dk. Entrees 179DKK–295DKK. SALT Restaurant in the Copenhagen Admiral hotel.

Restaurant Zeleste NYHAVN DANISH/FRENCH With a vine-strewn courtyard at the back and a bow-fronted dining room inside, Zeleste just may be the most visually appealing restaurant in town. Luckily the standard of food matches the decor; Danish dishes with French overtones include grilled lobster and venison cooked in blueberries and wine. Seasonal specials change nightly. Store Strandstræde 6.  45 3316 0606. www.zeleste.dk. Entrees 135DKK–195DKK. AE, DC, MC, V. Mon–Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri 11am–11pm, Sat 10am–11pm, Sun 10am–10pm. Metro: Kongens Nytorv. Map p 90.

★★★ The Royal Smushi Café STRØGET SMØRREBRØD This cafe gives new meaning to the word “kitsch”: Think pink walls, a metallic sheen on the glitzy leaf-patterned ceiling, and spoof Old Masters on the walls. There’s an array of coffees and teas and the lunch-time menu includes smushi, a happy mash-up of smørrebrød and sushi—curried herring, burgers, and tasty fish fillets all served in miniature. The menu changes seasonally and might feature poached crab with mushrooms and spinach, or oxtail and sweetbreads. There’s a direct shuttle from here to the Operaen (see p 119) across the Øresund. ★★★ Søren K CHRISTIANSHAVN MODERN EUROPEAN Named for Copenhagen’s gloomiest philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, this sleekly modern spot is an expensive night out but worth the price for the views over the Øresund from the Royal Library’s Sorte Diamond (Black Diamond, see p 29). Under head chef Jens Søndergaard, its light modern European fare introduces flashes of nouvelle cuisine.
