If this book’s entire chapter devoted to cookies didn’t tip you off, let me tell you once again what a serious sweet tooth I have. I always save room for dessert. Actually, maybe that’s why I eat so many veggies—it’s a great excuse to finish off a meal with a slice of cake or pie, a warm-from-the-oven brownie or blondie, or a heaping bowl of ice cream. With a side of cookies, of course. If a waiter asks if I want to see a dessert menu, the answer is always “yes,” unless it’s “one of each, please.” That said, while I’m lucky enough to travel and eat in fancy restaurants, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been disappointed by desserts that are mucked up with too-fancy exotic glazes, strange flavor combinations, or skimpy portions. Desserts shouldn’t have to have anything to prove—they just need to be good! That’s why my favorite recipes are the ones for classic treats, where you don’t have to be a pastry chef to make them. That’s exactly what you’ll find in this chapter: my favorite, tried-and-true desserts that always have people asking for the recipe. These desserts are simple enough that you can reach for one on a weeknight if someone gets an A on their science test, or when you’re having people over for a birthday or a holiday, or to bring to someone’s home. And don’t forget that dessert can be a meal on its own! We love having people over for “just desserts.” No one minds grabbing a bite of dinner before coming over if you’re offering up a spread of cake, brownies, and ice cream.
