Upon publication of Always Hungry?, we received an outpouring of support and encouragement beyond anything we had imagined. Several dedicated readers helped us form a Facebook community and volunteered to moderate. Wow, what a difference they made! Today, our community is flourishing, thanks to our growing team of moderators and the enthusiastic participation of many thousands of readers. The community inspired us to write this cookbook.
We are forever grateful to our Rock Star moderators, recipe testers, and now friends Brian Baumgartner, Brian Goodhart, Carlisle Douglas, Cassandra Sample, Connie Hurlbut, Flo Bruehl, Gary Markley, Gloria Lindh, Heather Jinmaku-Brown, Ingrid Farnbach, Jan Adamczyk, Jenny Dufault, Jenny Knight, Jen Sullivan, Joanne Katzen-Jones, Julie Miller, Kate Sommers, Keri Mertens Rabe, Kimberly Cooper, Laura Norden, Leeann Maat, Linda Fischer Palmer, Lynne Thompson, Malvina Craig, Marilynn Slade, Michael Guy, Morgan Perkins, Nancy Boykin, Nikki Szegda Isakson, and Stephani Morancie. Thank you for your selfless work on our shared mission (and for making Dawn laugh before breakfast many times).
In addition to the moderators, other cooks and non-cooks provided feedback on the recipes, including Anne McKay, Cara Ebbeling, Craig Lambert, Jane Piercy, Peggy Falk, and Linda Steinberg (thanks for the yogic stretches); Becky Mozaffarian and Krystle Benedict and their families (thanks for the Friday recipe marathons); and Anna Merli and Natasha Novoselova (thanks for the countless hours together in the kitchen). Grandma Bettie Black was a loving presence in our home, supporting the family with childcare when Dawn was immersed in this project.
We are deeply grateful to Elizabeth Coyle for exceptional technical and editorial support. With her gentle, quiet, flexible, and compassionate demeanor, Elizabeth made a big project manageable and fun. She devoted many hours to inputting recipe data, calculating ratios, menu building, blogging, answering e-mails, and helping to translate Dawn’s spoken words onto paper. We know that Elizabeth will go on to do great things in the food and publishing world. Thanks also to our dear friend Mariska van Aalst for editorial assistance and support.
Food pictures were taken by Scott and Donna Erb of Erb Photography, working with food stylist Dona Bourgery at That’s a Wrap Design. It was a joy to work with this talented team.
We had the honor and pleasure of collaborating with the Culinary Management Nutrition faculty at the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at George Brown College, Toronto, to develop a course based on the Always Hungry? program. Several of the students’ delicious and nutrient-compliant recipes are featured in this book. Thanks especially to Moira Cockburn, Tony Garcia, Sharon Booy, Candace Rambert, Patrick Secord, Ema Costantini, and their team and students. We look forward to much more together! Heartfelt thanks also to the sweet Heather Jinmaku-Brown, who provided several recipes to help round out the mix.
A thousand thanks to the team at Grand Central Publishing—our former editor Sarah Pelz (who’s gone on to great new things), editorial director Karen Murgolo, assistant editor Morgan Hedden, publicity director Matthew Ballast, and the marketing trio of Brian McLendon, Amanda Pritzker, and Andrew Duncan. They make the agony and ecstasy of book writing more of the latter.
Our agent, Richard Pine, and his team at Inkwell Management, including Alexis Hurley and Eliza Rothstein, provided wise counsel, support, and friendship. These folks are as good as it gets!
The science for our nutritional approach is based in part on research findings from the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. We are grateful to the Center’s current and former members (too numerous to mention by name here) and especially Center codirector Cara Ebbeling. Thanks also to Gary Taubes and Mark Friedman for stimulating discussions and critical feedback.
And finally, Dawn is indebted to all her teachers, students, and support teams who taught and inspired her along her professional and personal life’s path. Special thanks to Carl and Julia Ferre; David and Cynthia Briscoe; Elizabeth Foster; Lino and Jane Stanchich; Warren Kramer; Michio Kushi, and the team at the Kushi Institute; Morgan Jones and the team at the Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts; and, last but most certainly not least, Adrienne Nikki Cobb.
