44. In 1958 Michel Kervaire (1927-) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 44, 1958, 280-83 and John Milnor (1931—) in Annals of Math.(2), 68, 1958, 444-49, both using a result of Raoul Bott (1923-), proved that the only possible division algebras with real coefficients, if one does not assume the associative and commutative laws of multiplication, are the real and complex numbers, quaternions, and the Cayley numbers.
