1: Books

Baker, Carolyn. Navigating the Coming Chaos: A Handbook for Inner Transition. Indiana: iUniverse, 2011. Provides emotional and spiritual preparation for turbulent times. You might also enjoy Carolyn’s other books on coping through climate chaos: Collapsing Consciously, Dark Gold, Saving Animals from Ourselves, and Savage Grace (the last two are written with Andrew Harvey).

Barrows, Anita and Joanna Macy. Rilke’s Book of Hours: Love Poems to God. New York: Riverhead Books, 1996. A superb translation of some of Rilke’s finest poems; includes a fascinating account of the great poet’s life.

Climate Reality Project. Beginning the Conversation: A Family’s Guide (free e-booklet). https://www.climaterealityproject.org/sites/default/files/kidsandclimatechangee-book.pdf. A clear, sensible guide for discussing climate change with children that includes simple facts and conversation starters.

Frankl, Viktor. Man’s Search for Meaning. Boston: Beacon Press, 1959–2006. A classic and harrowing account of a psychiatrist’s life through suffering and hope amid atrocious circumstances.

Harvey, Andrew. The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism. California: Hay House, 2009. From the passionately compassionate teacher and scholar, Harvey offers wise inner and outer guidance on activism as a soulful path.

Hawken, Paul. Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. New York: Penguin Books, 2017. The encyclopedia for outer action (except rebellion) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Jung, Carl. The Basic Writings of C. G. Jung (Modern Library), New York: Random House, 1959. A good introduction to Jung’s teachings and work in depth psychology.

Kelly, Brendan. The Yin and Yang of Climate Crisis: Healing Personal, Cultural, and Ecological Imbalance with Chinese Medicine. California: North Atlantic Books, 2015. Discusses climate change and outer action in the context of traditional Chinese medicine patterns of imbalance.

Korngold, Efrem and Harriet Beinfield. Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine. New York: Random House, 1991. The best introduction to the basic principles and practice of Chinese medicine.

Krishnamurti, Jiddu. Freedom from the Known. New York: HarperCollins, 1969. My favorite book on Krishnamurti’s radical teachings.

Leonard, David Bruce. Medicine at Your Feet: Healing Plants of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Hawaii: Roast Duck Productions, 1998-2019. An authoritative and exhaustive rendering of Hawaiian medicinal plants, including uses for food.

Levoy, Gregg. Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life. New York: Three Rivers Press, 1997. One of my favorite books of all time; exquisite, poetic prose and many astonishing, real-life accounts to help you awaken to your deepest callings and purpose.

Licata, Matt. The Path Is Everywhere: Uncovering the Jewels Hidden Within You. Colorado: Wandering Yogi Press, 2017. Heartfelt, wise counsel from a somatic therapist about our finer jewels of being human which emerge from transformative, body-centered emotional work.

May, Rollo. The Courage to Create. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1975. A key influence in my earlier years; I can’t even remember what May said, but it changed me.

Mitchell, Stephen. Letters to a Young Poet. New York: Random House, 1984. Letters by favorite poet, Rilke, this is a compendium on fierce wisdom of the passion to write, think and feel deeply, and follow one’s truth.

Oliver, Mary. New and Selected Poems, Volume One. Boston: Beacon Press, 1992. Just read her poems if you haven’t … or if you haven’t for a while, even if it was yesterday. My favorite of her poems, “No Voyage,” was included in the Grief chapter but had to be removed for copyright reasons.

Pitchford, Paul. Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition. California: North Atlantic Books, 2002. I studied with Paul years ago, and his book is a classic on the holistic model for using herbs, food, and mind-body practices in a holistic context.

Richo, David. Shadow Dance: Liberating the Power and Creativity of Your Dark Side. Boston: Shambhala Publications, 1999. A helpful guide for befriending our positive and negative shadows and making them allies.

Richo, David. When the Past is Present: Healing the Emotional Wounds that Sabotage Our Relationships. Boston: Shambhala Publications, 2008. Crucial wisdom and excellent writing from one of my long-term mentors to supplement inner work, especially on grief and shadow work vis à vis “hurt people hurt others.”

Rogers, Carl. On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy. New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1961. From one of my heroes, this heartfelt classic guided me through my late teens and helped me learn the language and landscape of inner work. While staying at a mountain retreat deep in the Spanish Pyrenees, I wept deeply the winter I learned Dr. Rogers had passed away.

Tierra, Michal, C.A., N.D. Planetary Herbology. Wisconsin: Lotus Press, 1992. My favorite herbal handbook that categorizes many Western herbs within the Chinese system.

Walker, Dean Spillane. The Impossible Conversation: Choosing Reconnection and Resilience at the End of Business as Usual. Oregon: Dean Walker, 1997. A primer on facing climate crisis honestly with a broken-open heart and building meaningful relationships.

Weber, Jack Adam. Rebearth: Poems for Personal and Planetary Transformation. Please check www.jackadamweber.com for availability.

Weber, Jack Adam. Nature of the Heart: Poems for Holistic Healing. Hawaii: Earthbound Press, 2008. A collection of poems conveying the death-and-rebirth healing process through my core love wounds.

Welwood, John. Journey of the Heart: The Path of Conscious Love. New York: HarperCollins, 1991. A “bible” to me in my earlier years by one of my first teachers on how inner work and integrity develop from the path of authentic intimate relationships and deep love.
