Sandwiched between Los Feliz and the suburb of Glendale, Atwater Village offers charming residential neighborhoods as well as a burgeoning dining and shopping scene. The neighborhood has long been home to low-key watering holes such as the Roost and Bigfoot Lodge, which attract hip crowds from nearby Hollywood, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz. And the opening of an upscale day spa and a handful of trendy shops and restaurants is only adding to the appeal of this formerly under-the-radar ’hood.
Walk Description
Begin at the corner of Glenfeliz Boulevard and Los Feliz Boulevard, and head south on Glenfeliz, passing an elementary school on your left as you head away from busy Los Feliz Boulevard into a relatively quiet residential neighborhood filled with homes topped with Spanish roofs.
After crossing Dover Street, bear left to remain on Glenfeliz. The street is lined with shady sycamore trees and quaint, modest-sized homes in a predominantly Spanish architectural style.
Turn left on Glendale Boulevard. This stretch of the busy thoroughfare is home to a variety of small businesses; the mix includes everything from dentists and insurance offices to upscale home-furnishings and pet boutiques. Thankfully, there are also some good dining options here. Indochine Vien, at 3110, serves up mouthwatering pho and other affordable Vietnamese tasties, while
Tacos Villa Corona, at 3185, is the spot for what very well may be the best potato tacos you’ve ever tasted (for just a buck). And if you’re in the mood for some retro flavor, stop in at
Club Tee Gee, at 3210, a dive bar that’s been around since 1946 and has the decor to match (re-created after a fire destroyed the interior in 1993).
Turn left on Brunswick Avenue. Notice the colorful “fantasy bungalows” at 3642 and 3648. These 1920s homes combine Egyptian and Norman architectural styles to unique and whimsical effect and are so named because their style shows the influence of silent-movie sets from that period. At 3742 is another notable home featuring trapezoidal windows. Apart from these standouts, the street features a hodgepodge of residential architecture, consisting mainly of Craftsman and Mediterranean homes.
Turn right on Dover Street and walk two short blocks to Revere Avenue.
Turn left on Revere.
Turn left on Los Feliz Boulevard. Straight ahead is a large shopping complex featuring a Costco, Toys“R”Us, Best Buy, and various chain restaurants. At 2980 is the Tudor-style Tam O’Shanter Inn (part of the venerable Lawry’s restaurant family), which specializes in prime rib. Inside, waitresses dressed in Scottish tartan serve up tasty fare such as Yorkshire pudding, Toad in the Hole, and, of course, prime rib. While the atmosphere is a bit stuffy and the prices steep, dining here is a unique experience, and the food is undeniably delicious. Walt Disney came here often, and if you’re lucky, you might get seated at his favorite spot.
Other notable locations on this stretch of Los Feliz Boulevard include neighborhood watering holes The Griffin, The Roost, and The Bigfoot Lodge, at 3000, 3100, and 3172, respectively; India Sweets and Spices, which features a casual cafeteria where you can snack on tasty vegetarian Indian fare or enjoy a complete meal on the cheap, at 3126; and
Potted, a fun and eclectic garden-design shop, at 3158. On the north side of the street is the
Los Feliz Municipal Golf Course, an affordable nine-hole course tucked into the corner of Griffith Park, at 3207 Los Feliz Blvd. (You may choose to forgo the links and enjoy a greasy bite at an outdoor table at the course’s Los Feliz Cafe.)
Return to your starting point at the corner of Glenfeliz Boulevard. To reward yourself for your nearly 2-mile trek, consider dropping in at dtox Day Spa, just past Glenfeliz at 3206 Los Feliz Blvd. This pampering sanctuary, housed in a beautifully converted industrial space, offers Zen-inspired treatments and all the spa amenities you need to unwind completely.
