Seven Promises “to Him That Overcometh”

Revelation 2–3 submits the seven-fold phrase “to him that overcometh,” which is directed to individuals—females and males—who overcome the world and its wickedness. Each phrase, found in the letters to the seven churches (see Rev. 2:11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 13:9), is followed by one or more promises (shown in italics), which pertain directly to the temple.281 For example:

“Eat of the tree of life” (Rev. 2:7). Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all who overcome death receive the promise and blessing to “eat of the tree of life.”

“Will I give to eat of the hidden manna” (Rev. 2:17). The hidden manna refers to Jesus (see John 6:48–51).

“Give him a white stone” (Rev. 2:17). Written upon this white stone will be a new name, which is “the key word” (D&C 130:10–11).

“New name” (Rev. 2:17; see also D&C 130:10–11). The new name, similar to the white robe (see Rev. 3:5, 6:11, and 7:9), conveys the idea of a new existence, or a new life.

“Will I give power over [many kingdoms]” (Rev. 2:26). “Many kingdoms” refers to eternal, not temporal kingdoms. The Saints are invited to “come up unto the crown prepared for you, and be made rulers over many kingdoms” (D&C 78:15).

“The same shall be clothed in white raiment” (Rev. 3:5). These are they who are transformed into new persons by Jesus’s atoning sacrifice; they “have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 7:14). The white clothing, with the new name, signifies a new state of existence.

“Will I make a pillar in the temple of my God” (Rev. 3:12). Exalted men and women are compared to the pillars of a temple, which are stable, strong, and permanent fixtures of the temple precinct. These Saints will stand forever in the heavenly temple, never to be removed by evil forces.

“I will write upon him the name of my God” (Rev. 3:12; see also Rev. 14:1; D&C 132:20; 133:18). The righteous will take the name of the Lord.

“I will write upon him my new name” (Rev. 3:12). Christ will give the righteous His own new name.
