* In December 1939, Mościcki was released and allowed to move to Switzerland where he remained for the rest of the war. Beck died in internment in Rumania in June 1944. Rydz-Śmigły escaped from Rumania in December 1940 and returned to Poland via Hungary and Slovakia to serve in the AK. He died in Warsaw in 1941 and was buried under his alias ‘Adam Zawisza’; a new tombstone with his correct name was erected in 1994.
