PART II

NOW A LITTLE BIT OLDER . . . MARSHA’S CHILDREN REFLECT ON HOMEBIRTH

Morgaine

I think homebirth is interesting because a lot of people don’t even know that you don’t just have to have a baby in a hospital. I learned that when I was really young, watching my siblings be born.

Felix

It’s really important to me to have my babies at home. I’d understand if my wife really didn’t want to but I’d try to explain to her that I think it’s better for the babies and for her.

Priya

Some people had to hide their births to have a midwife because other people only believed that doctors could help you have a baby. I think I’d like to have a homebirth when I grow up. Well I mean I’d like to try. Angela (our friend) tried to have a homebirth with both her babies but then she had to go to the hospital. But I really want to try. I think it’s healthier.

Anjali

Um, I think I want to have a homebirth. I just think it’s normal. You get to decide which way you want to have your baby. I’m happy I was born at home because I was born in the place that I lived. It’s cool because I know exactly the place where I was born.

When I first saw the shoes in Winners

they made me excited.

but in another moment
after a nurse screamed
Push that baby around your spine
there she was on my chest
staring into my eyes and
