PENDANT LANTERN

The shape of this beautiful decoration has been inspired by the open latticework of Moroccan lanterns and it will provide you with a beautiful feature anywhere in your home. It could be styled as a mobile in a baby’s nursery or to hang as a decorative piece alongside your hanging planters.

  1. Take both of the 5m (1612ft) lengths of rope and fold them in half over the inside of the metal ring to give you four equal lengths of rope hanging down.
  2. Place all four cords inside the 10cm (4in) cane ring. The cane ring sitting horizontally is now to be used as the holding cord (see Knotting Terminology).
  3. Take two adjacent cords, drop down 30cm (12in) and tie the cords onto the ring with double half hitches (see Half Hitch Knots). Repeat to tie the remaining two cords onto the opposite side of the cane ring.
  4. Attach twenty-four of the 4m (1314ft) lengths of rope to the cane ring – twelve cords to each half – using reverse lark’s head knot (see Reverse Lark’s Head Knot).
  5. Secure the cords to the ring by tying a row of thirteen square knots (see Square Knot) directly beneath the cane ring.
  6. Alternate cords (see Knotting Terminology), drop down 7cm (234in) and tie a row of thirteen square knots.
  7. Alternate cords, drop down 7cm (234in) and tie another row of thirteen square knots.
  8. Place all cords inside one of the 20cm (8in) cane rings. This cane ring sitting horizontally is now to be used as the holding cord. Tie all cords onto the cane ring using triple half hitches (see Half Hitch Knots).
  9. Secure the cords to the cane ring by tying a row of thirteen square knots directly beneath.
  10. Alternate cords, drop down 3cm (118in) and tie a row of thirteen square knots.
  11. Alternate cords, drop down 3cm (118in) and tie another row of thirteen square knots.
  12. Repeat steps 8 and 9 with the second 20cm (8in) cane ring.
  13. Alternate cords, drop down 4.5cm (134in) and tie a row of thirteen square knots.
  14. Alternate cords, drop down 4.5cm (134in) and tie another row of thirteen square knots.
  15. Place all cords inside the 13cm (5in) cane ring. This cane ring sitting horizontally is now to be used as the holding cord. Tie all cords onto the cane ring using double half hitches.
  16. Trim the cords to 65cm (2512in) or to your desired length.
