ADVANCED WALL HANGING
A retro inspired and geometric styled wall hanging that is sure to impress as it showcases your developing skills. Ideal for an intermediate level, it demonstrates how by combining a few of the basic macramé knots, a unique and intricately knotted pattern can be created. The top and bottom panels are worked with an alternating double square knot pattern and are joined by a feature arrow design and a band of half knot spirals.
MATERIALS:
- 136m (4481⁄2ft) length of 5mm (1⁄4in) rope
- 46cm (181⁄4in) length of 1.8cm (3⁄4in) dowel
KNOTS & TECHNIQUES:
- Reverse Lark’s Head Knot
- Square Knot
- Alternating Double Square Knot Pattern
- Horizontal Double Half Hitch
- Overhand Knot
- Diagonal Double Half Hitch
- Half Knot Spiral
- Mounting Techniques
- Fraying
- Numbering Cords
PREPARATION:
- Cut twenty-six 5m (161⁄2ft) lengths of 5mm (1⁄4in) rope
- Cut four 1m (31⁄4ft) lengths of 5mm (1⁄4in) rope
- Cut one 2m (61⁄2ft) length of 5mm (1⁄4in) rope
Method
- Mount all twenty-six 5m (161⁄2ft) lengths of rope onto the dowel using reverse lark’s head knots (see Reverse Lark’s Head Knot). The width of the mounted rope should be 39cm (151⁄4in), with 3.5cm (13⁄8in) left uncovered at each end of the dowel. (See Mounting Techniques for preparing to start.)
- Directly beneath the dowel, tie a row of thirteen square knots (see Square Knot).
- Tie another row of thirteen square knots directly beneath the previous row.
- Alternate cords (see Knotting Terminology) and tie a row of twelve square knots.
- Tie another row of twelve square knots directly beneath the previous row.
- Alternate cords and tie a row of thirteen square knots directly beneath the previous row.
- Repeat step 3 to complete the first panel of alternating double square knot pattern (see Alternating Square Knot Pattern).
- Place a 1m (31⁄4ft) length of rope horizontally directly beneath the last row of knots. This is now the holding cord (see Knotting Terminology).
- Tie horizontal double half hitches (see Half Hitch Knots) with all cords along the holding cord.
- Tie an overhand knot (see Overhand Knot) at each end of the holding cord and trim the ends to 10cm (4in) and fray (see Fraying).
- Tie a row of thirteen square knots.
- Now start to create the arrow design panel (steps 12–48). First, number the cords 1 to 52 (see Numbering Cords).
- Make cord 3 a holding cord (see Knotting Terminology); bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches (see Half Hitch Knots) with cords 4–8.
- Make cord 14 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 9–13.
- Make cord 15 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 16–20.
- Make cord 26 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 21–25.
- Make cord 27 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 28–32.
- Make cord 38 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 33–37.
- Make cord 39 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 40–44.
- Make cord 50 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 45–49.
- Number the cords 1 to 52.
- Make cord 2 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 3–7.
- Make cord 14 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 10–13.
- Make cord 15 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 16–19.
- Make cord 26 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 22–25.
- Make cord 27 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 28–31.
- Make cord 38 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 34–37.
- Make cord 39 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 40–43.
- Make cord 51 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 46–50.
- Drop down 1cm (3⁄8in) and tie a row of five square knots (see Square Knot) as follows: the first square knot consists of two working cords on each side and four filler cords; the second, third and fourth square knots consist of two working cords on each side and eight filler cords; and the fifth square knot consists of two working cords on each side and four filler cords.
- Number cords 1 to 52.
- Make cord 7 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 2–6.
- Make cord 10 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 11–14.
- Make cord 19 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 15–18.
- Make cord 22 a holding cord; bring it down left to right and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 23–26.
- Make cord 31 a holding cord; bring it down right to left and tie diagonal double half hitches with cords 27–30.
