Each crystal profile in Part 2 includes an exercise for a specific purpose, but first let’s explore some general ways in which these versatile tools can facilitate everyday mindfulness. (You’ll find ways to select a crystal on pages 18–19.)
Take three mindful breaths (see page 23), as you hold the crystal or look at the photograph. The intention is not to ‘zone out’ but rather to become more present. ‘Palm stones’ – flat, rounded shapes (see Labradorite, page 78) – are specially made to facilitate this way of using your crystal and are often known as ‘worry stones’, although ‘anti-worry’ would be a better description. They are excellent if you feel anxious, and also act as a reminder to stay in the present moment. A large tumble stone works equally well (see Bloodstone, page 48).
If your crystal is clear, and especially if it has planes and occlusions (see Brandenberg Amethyst, page 56), you can use it to ‘crystal gaze’. To do this, hold the crystal or place it at eye level in front of you. Allow your eyes to go into soft focus and gently scan the crystal until your eyes naturally come to rest. Continue gazing into the crystal until your mind clears, your breathing slows and you relax, fully present in the moment. This method works well with crystals such as Labradorite (see page 78), Selenite (see page 70), AnandaliteTM (page 72), Amethyst (see page 64) or Malachite (see page 68).
Wearing your crystal means that its energy is constantly radiated into your personal energy field, bringing it into harmony. It is useful when you have successfully performed an exercise from one of the crystal profiles inPart 2 and would like to continue experiencing the stone. Crystals are particularly effective worn over the thymus gland, about a hand’s breath below your throat, as this connects to your physical and subtle immune systems. Try placing a crystal in a metal spiral and stringing it around your neck, or wearing one set in silver as a pendant. A bracelet of crystals or stone chips also works well. Bear in mind a crystal may be most effective when it actually touches your skin.
The photographs in this book beautifully encapsulate crystal energy. To attune to that energy, place your hand over a photograph and allow the energy to pass into your palm chakra, up your arm and into your heart and mind. Alternatively, place the photograph face down on any part of your body that feels the need. Leave it in place for a few moments, taking three mindful breaths as you do so (see page 23). You can also ‘crystal gaze’ into the photograph as described on page 22. Why not try it now with the photograph below?
This photograph of Citrine provides the same energies as would the crystal itself.
