A panino (plural panini) is a bread bun and a crostino (plural crostini) is a small slice of bread, about 1 cm (1/2 inch) thick, toasted or untoasted. They are usually filled or topped with local cured meats and cheeses, but also grilled vegetables, mozzarella or pesto, replaced by radicchio tardivo and casatella cheese in winter.
You absolutely must try: baccalà mantecato on a crostino of bread, a slice of grilled polenta or in a piccolo panino, and a tuna and horseradish panino.
