Titus, the pathologist who performed the autopsy, testified in a deposition in connection with the administration of Hughes’s estate, he described the codeine levels cited in the autopsy report as “compatible with therapeutic usage.” Two years later, at Dr. Thain’s trial, Titus acknowledged that his previous statements were “in error” because he had misinterpreted milligrams for micrograms. Thus the level of codeine was 1,000 times greater than he originally thought.
