*The will and instructions were put in safe-deposit box No. 3102 at the First National Bank in Houston. More than thirty-eight years later, after Hughes’s death, when frantic efforts were being made to find Hughes’s will, the bank reported that it could discover no trace of the 1938 will or related papers. The bank said its records from that period were incomplete. One document found among Hughes’s papers was the draft of a telegram ordering the bank to break into the safe-deposit box in 1944 and return the contents to Hughes. But there is no indication whether the telegram was actually sent and, if so, whether Hughes’s instructions were carried out.
