^*Joseph F. Smith became president of the Mormon Church in January of 1970, following the death of David O. McKay, the church’s ninth president. Smith, whose grandfather Hyrum Smith was a brother of the church’s founder, served as spiritual leader of the church until his death in July of 1972.
