Chapter 4

Challenging Cryptics

IN THIS CHAPTER

check Flexing your brain with medium-hard cryptic crosswords

check Applying more advanced clue-solving techniques

This chapter has a nice collection of medium-level cryptics. I’ve written these for those who feel more confident about solving cryptics, and would like a bit more of a challenge.

I’ve made them a little harder than the easy crosswords by using a broader vocabulary both in the grids and in the clues. Some definitions are a bit more oblique, and some abbreviations may be a bit harder. There are some words ‘in plain view’ within the clues (where you don’t need to find a synonym), but not as many as in the easy crosswords in Chapter 3. There are also more anagram clues than you see in a regular cryptic, but fewer than in the easy crosswords.
