We love essential oils. And we love blending them. That’s why we have chosen to feature essential oils in almost every one of our recipes. Blending together essential oils is at the heart of what an aromatherapist does, and since we both began our journey into plant-based beauty as aromatherapists, essential oils play a key role in our formulations.
Before we begin blending essential oils together, let’s review what an essential oil actually is and how the complex design of its many molecules resonates throughout the formula and works to deliver a quintessential holistic experience.
What Is an Essential Oil?
An essential oil is the distilled aromatic essence of a plant. It is made up of a complex design of many molecules (in some instances upward of a hundred) that impart both physiological actions and emotional psychospiritual experiences. As a consequence of this very unique and powerful dual function, essential oils are able to affect both the body and the mind simultaneously.
The hundreds of unique molecules that make up the whole essential oil are present at varying percentages, so when we mix different oils together, they have a remarkable ability to bond together to either increase or diminish the specific actions of the molecules that make them up.
For example, let’s take a look at peppermint and rosemary essential oils. Both essential oils are made up of similar molecules with actions that help dissolve mucus in the body. By combining these two oils together in a blend, we increase their mucolytic effect. The same goes for emotional healing and support.
As another example, mandarin essential oil is known to be uplifting. Now imagine blending it with other oils that make us feel happier. Suddenly the antidepressive actions of mandarin are greatly increased because we’ve blended it with other uplifting oils.
Understanding intuitively how the oils blend and smell together can take years of experience. It is a skill that requires a strong foundation in the science of aromatic medicine plus lots of practical experience actually mixing, blending, and using the oils. But we hope that by sharing our list of essential oils, along with our notes and our experiences, we can give you a jump-start on learning how essential oils work.
What Is a Synergy?
A synergy is a thoughtfully curated blend of three to five essential oils. Each oil is selected after careful consideration of its unique therapeutic action and aroma, along with an understanding that, when mixed with the others, the combined effect of the whole blend is greater than the sum of its parts.
We have chosen to include synergies in our recipes because they significantly shape the purpose and intention of each product we make. Each essential oil contributes a unique and integral action and aroma, like an anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving action or a sweet or spicy scent, to the whole synergy, and then they echo throughout the entire recipe.
Incorporating synergies into our recipes also guides the holistic experience of using the products. As aromatherapists, we understand the power of how essential oils can affect both the body and mind, and when crafting holistic plant-based skincare, we want to make certain that the products we make feel good, smell good, and actually work.
Recipes for Essential Oil Synergies
We have designed twenty-nine unique plant-powered synergy recipes that thoughtfully combine thirty different essential oils we selected for this book. Each synergy recipe is made up of three to five essential oils, with a specific amount of drops to unleash the therapeutic and aromatic properties of the oils so they can bloom into a beneficial blend.
You will find the synergies included as ingredients in our product recipes, so we suggest referring to pages 50–53 often and premaking the synergies you intend to use most often.
We suggest mixing up essential oil blends in small, dark glass bottles and keeping them on hand for whenever you make a beauty recipe. Think of them as a kind of “back stock,” or inventory, of premade blends, like a spice rack for your beauty kitchen that you can reach for at any given moment.
Feel free to mix and match the synergies with different recipes. A synergy for headache relief could also be tremendously effective for energizing tired achy feet and legs, or a synergy for sensitive skin could be lovely for soothing the itch of bug bites. Take a look at the oil chart beginning on page 54 to learn about the spectrum of therapeutic actions each essential oil offers.
HOW TO STORE YOUR SYNERGIES
You should store your synergies in small, dark 5 ml bottles that have orifice reducers—these small plastic built-in droppers reduce the amount of oxygen getting into the bottle and provide an easy way to dispense the essential oils without waste. Label and date each bottle so you can remember what is inside and when you blended it. We suggest mixing a total of at least 80 to 100 drops of your synergy to store in your bottle. The 5 ml bottles hold approximately 120 drops of essential oil.
Since our combination of essential oils includes oils that may be irritating to the skin if used individually, be careful to not get them directly on your hands, and definitely keep them away from your eyes or mucus membranes.
DROPPING DROPS
While blending your synergies, if you find it challenging to dispense drops directly from each essential oil bottle using the orifice reducer, we suggest wiggling out the plastic piece and using a clean disposable pipette (one for each different oil) to precisely count the drops.
THOUGHTS BEFORE BLENDING
When you read through the synergy recipes, you will find the name of each essential oil followed by the number of drops. Combine all drops together in your synergy bottle, pop in the orifice reducer, and then gently shake to combine the essential oils. We have found that the synergies are most aromatic when they are given time to rest and marinate, anywhere from 2 to 24 hours, before they are used in a beauty product recipe.
