homemade pizza your way

A fun Sunday night tradition of ours is making homemade pizzas together as a family. One of our kids’ favorite parts is getting to choose the toppings for their sections of the pie. We’ve actually found that foods they normally won’t eat on their own become totally appealing to them when tossed on their pizza. I guess pizza truly is a magic food.

Makes one 9-inch pizza, serves 2

1 disk White Wheat Pizza Dough or prepared dough

½ A cup Veggie-Heavy Pizza Sauce or other sauce

½ cup shredded mozzarella

Optional desired toppings (see Note)

Olive oil, for brushing the crust

TOPPING IDEAS:

ham, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, peppers, pepperoni, steamed kale, onions, fresh basil, corn kernels, sun-dried tomatoes, scallions, grilled chicken, artichoke hearts, shrimp, steamed broccoli, prosciutto, anchovies, bacon, and sausage

1. Preheat the oven to 500°F.

2. Holding it at the edges, pinch and pull the disk of dough until it forms a 9-inch circle. Periodically switch from pulling and pinching the dough to stretching it out using your knuckles. If you’re feeling adventurous, rest the dough on top of your fist and stretch it outward. Don’t be scared to throw the dough up in the air! According to my friend who used to work at Spago, this actually helps form an even circle.

3. Place the dough on a baking sheet. Spread the sauce over the dough and top with mozzarella and your desired toppings. Brush the outside of the crust with a bit of olive oil and bake 10 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
