START TIME: 4:06 AM END TIME: 9:15 PM
Jen shoved off from the base of Katahdin really early and touched the sign that marks the start of the trail at 4:06 AM. She was out of Baxter State Park (14+ miles from Katahdin’s summit) by 8 AM and was able to hike quickly for the rest of the day because she’s fresh, the weather’s good, and the terrain’s pretty easy—no mountains yet.
For every mile that Jen hikes in Maine, her support crew will have to drive about 3 miles to reach her. A lot of those miles are on dirt logging roads where we can’t drive faster than 30 mph. Warren found out yesterday that a bridge was being rebuilt on one of the roads. It would have kept us from reaching her for re-supply early on Day 2, so we had to split up. Melissa and I took the three re-supplies this afternoon and Warren drove around to the other side of the bridge so he could re-supply her first thing in the morning. This is the kind of choreography that can make a difference on a hike like this and it’s a LOT easier when you have a trail guru like Warren with you.
