START TIME: 5:05 AM END TIME: 9:40 PM
This was Jen’s biggest mileage day since Day 1. Hiking this much is impressive enough in itself but doing it in a daylong rain through the rocks of Pennsylvania is even more impressive. She reached Swatara Gap around 8 AM and PA 443 about 25 minutes later. Jim hiked in a few miles with her pack so she wouldn’t have to carry it quite so far on the 16-mile stretch, then Dutch hiked in from PA 325 to keep her company for the last mile or so. They got in around 12:45, so early that I was still napping. Rambler hiked in again with her pack for a few minutes before turning around, and Jen made it to PA 225 by about 4 PM.
Dutch and I went into Duncannon to shop for groceries, pick up some pizza, and check the internet, then we headed out to the Clarks Ferry Bridge and met up with Jen around 6:30. She and I road-walked into Duncannon together while Dutch drove my car around to meet up with Jim on the other side. From there, he and Jen hiked strong the last 8.5 miles to PA 850 and got in about 9:45.
Jen was really happy with her big day, but she can’t get too complacent since it would be good for her to log another 50+ miler tomorrow over the relatively flat terrain of south central Pennsylvania around Carlisle, Boiling Springs, and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Wow. I can’t believe I’m married to this woman.
