On Delta South Surrey Greenway

IN SPITE of its uninviting name and circuitous approach, Surrey’s Mud Bay Park is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. Certainly it is a safe ride for rusty cyclists and families with young children; more ambitious riders can pedal the entire 16-kilometre dyke to Boundary Bay.

Two loop trails around the shoreline afford views of the tussocks and tidal channels of the shallow bay. Sandpipers probe the mudflats or soar and wheel above the water to confound a raiding falcon; with binoculars you might spot harbour seals hauled out on the sandbars where the Serpentine and Nicomekl Rivers empty into the eastern end of the bay. Note, though, that the shoreline trails are closed to cyclists from October 15 to April 15 to provide a quiet haven for over-wintering and migratory birds.

A further attraction to this trip around Mud Bay is the suggested picnic spot and turnaround point at Delta Heritage Airpark, home of the Boundary Bay Flying Club, and now part of Boundary Bay Regional Park. Here you can watch light planes take off or land while you eat your lunch. A coffee shop, run by volunteers, is usually open weekends; if there is no one around to serve you, you are welcome to fix yourself a coffee and leave your money on the counter. On the second Sunday of the month, the club hosts an egg and pancake breakfast.

For your return to Mud Bay Park, our route makes a foray into the farmland between the highway and the bay—a short loop on quiet roads before rejoining the dyke.
