Site of the first Fort Langley
LEAVING WALNUT GROVE, you speed down a long and glorious descent on Telegraph Trail. Thereafter, there is much to stop and look at on this historical ride.
Entering Fort Langley from its back door on River Road, you glimpse the restored Hudson’s Bay fort from below its stockade. Built on this site in 1839 as a fur-trading post, Fort Langley became a large and busy centre, employing an army of craftsmen to serve trappers, farmers and gold miners. Today, within the log palisade, the fort comprises both reconstructed and original buildings, including the Big House (the officers’ quarters), the general store, a cooperage and a blacksmith’s forge. Costumed staff members are on hand to answer any questions.
Four kilometres downstream, along your route, is the site of the first Fort Langley, hurriedly built in 1827 as a base for the Hudson’s Bay Company’s growing trade with the Native peoples of the Fraser River. A hiking/cycling route, the Fort-to-Fort Trail, links the two sites. Opposite the commemorative cairn is a restored 1909 homestead, as well as access to the Houston Trail (for walkers and horseback riders only) through the forest—all part of Derby Reach Regional Park.
Finally, via Edge Farm Trail, you arrive at the riverfront camping and picnic area at Edgewater Bar before heading home.
