These circles demonstrate the idea at its most elemental level: chain spokes radiating out from a center point and corralled with another chain that connects the spokes. See page 176 for a connection.

Of this family of motifs, this one looks the most like the classic motifs you may be familiar with. Here double crochet rounds are joined to the corner chains to create a solid fabric. See page 178 for connections.

[ RADIANTS ]

The first rounds of this motif family go all the way out to the corners, then subsequent rounds are worked around those spokes. Use strongly contrasting colors for the inner and outer rounds for best effect. You may want to think ahead to plan connections for this group, for in some cases the points are formed on the first round of the motif, rather than on the final round. This presents more options for creativity, as you may be able to join at the points, along the edges, or both.

This join features a variation of Rounds 1–3 of Motif 75. Round 3 is worked holding the corner chains to the front. Each motif is worked separately through Round 3, then joined with a final continuous round worked into the top loop of each corner chain. Several types of joins are used in this example.

[ TIP ]

The method used to join these circular motifs can be adapted to work continuous joins for a number of different shapes.

Here’s an instance where thinking ahead pays off: the corner chains formed in the first round are joined at their tips with a flat join. You could, of course, leave off Rounds 2–4 or connect the Round-4 stitches as well. Or you could change the finished shape to something entirely different, like circles, or triangles. What other shapes could you make using this technique?
