A Global Problem


The threat to turtles is a global problem. There is at least one endangered species on every continent except Antarctica (where turtles do not live).
Public education is always important, to teach people what they can do to protect their native turtles. You will learn more about some of these projects in chapter 6.

Pictured on the map (next page) are the locations of the top 25 most endangered freshwater turtles and tortoises (see descriptions on the following pages), along with the nesting sites of the marine  turtle species (dark areas along shorelines).
