* The Friends of the Hunley keep an onsite compilation of all historical records at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center. As far as could be determined, every author who wrote a book about the Hunley between 1995 and the writing of this book collaborated with the Friends of the Hunley. To date, only one book or report could be found that links Shock’s letter, which is often described as a work with questionable credibility, with his drawing, which is consistently given the highest credibility. Friends of the Hunley–affiliated author Brian Hicks is the only author who could be found who mentions the letter in his book with proper attribution to Shock and in connection to the technical drawing of the CSS Pioneer. However, he summarily dismisses the story about the contrabands as a “local rumor” without providing any supporting discussion that the story is only a rumor, and he even seems to chastise Shock for repeating it. Historian Tom Chaffin was the only author found who correctly quoted the Shock letter.
