* The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous were originally developed to guide men and women in recovery from alcoholism. These steps have been adapted for many kinds of self-help programs that address addictive and codependent behavior. The steps include admitting powerlessness over a problem, recognizing the need for help from a Higher Power such as God, making an inventory of past behavior, openly admitting and making amends for past wrongs, surrendering to receive help from one’s Higher Power, and eventually achieving spiritual awakening.
