Chapter Six: Motivation

  1. . In 2015, this student agreed to meet me for an interview, but he didn’t show up. I tried to reschedule with him, but he never agreed, and I don’t know exactly why he left school or what happened to him afterward.

  2. . I first heard this phrase from a Memphis graffiti artist named Brandon Marshall. It was a tagline for the 2011 documentary movie Miss Representation, about demeaning images of women in the media. I’m not sure where the phrase comes from originally.
