FINISHED SIZE

Shown in 54" (137 cm) circumference at lower edge.

YARN

About 655 yd (599 m) of worsted-weight (Medium #4) yarn.

We used: Naturally Merino & Fur (70% merino, 30% possum fur; 131 yd [120 m]/50 g): #06 maroon, 5 skeins.

NEEDLES

Size 9 (5.5 mm): 16" (40-cm) and 24" (60-cm) circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS

Markers (m); cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.

GAUGE

16 sts and 28 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st worked in the round.

STITCH GUIDE

2/2RC: Sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn.

2/2LC: Sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn.

CAPELET

With shorter cir needle, CO 64 sts. Place marker (pm) and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Turtleneck: Set-up row: *P2, k3, [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, k3, p2, place marker (pm) to denote end of back, k3, p2, k3, pm to denote end of right shoulder; rep from * for front and left shoulder. Original end-of-rnd marker denotes end of left shoulder. Work rib as established for 4 rnds. Next rnd: *P2, sl 1 st onto cn and hold in back, k2, k1f&b (see page 52) from cn, [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k1f&b, k2 from cn, p2, sl marker for end of back, sl 1 st onto cn and hold in back, k2, k1f&b from cn, p2, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k1f&b, k2 from cn, sl marker for end of right shoulder; rep from * once more for front and left shoulder—8 sts inc’d; 72 sts total; 4 sts in each cable crossing. Cont in patt as foll:

Rnds 1–7: *P2, k4, [p2, k2] 3 times, [p2, k4] 3 times; rep from * once more.

Rnd 8: *P2, 2/2RC (see Stitch Guide), [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, 2/2LC (see Stitch Guide), p2, sl marker for end of back, 2/2RC, p2, 2/2LC, sl marker for end of right shoulder; rep from * once more for front and left shoulder.

Rep Rnds 1–8 until piece measures 6" (15 cm) from beg, ending with Rnd 7 of patt.

Body: Note: The first two times you increase, there will not be enough sts in each shoulder section to work anything between the M1 increases. Work [M1L, M1R] in the same space at the center of each shoulder instead; once each shoulder has been inc’d to 14 sts, you can work the inc directions as shown.

Rnd 1: (inc and cable crossing rnd) *P2, 2/2RC, p2, M1L (see page 52), knit to 8 sts before marker for end of back, M1R (see page 52), p2, 2/2LC, p2, sl marker for end of back, 2/2RC, p2, M1L, knit to 6 sts before marker for end of right shoulder, M1R, p2, 2/2LC, sl marker for end of right shoulder; rep from * once more for front and left shoulder—8 sts inc’d; 80 sts total.

Rnd 2: Work 1 rnd even, working the sts as they appear (knit the knits and purl the purls).

Rnd 3: (inc rnd) *P2, k4, p2, M1L, knit to 8 sts before marker for end of back, M1R, p2, k4, p2, sl marker for end of back, k4, p2, M1L, knit to 6 sts before marker for end of right shoulder, M1R, p2, k4, sl marker for end of right shoulder; rep from * once more for front and left shoulder—8 sts inc’d; 88 sts total.

Rnds 4–7: Rep Rnds 2 and 3 two times—104 sts after completing Rnd 7.

Rnd 8: Work 1 rnd even.

Rnds 9–24: Rep Rnds 1–8 two more times—168 sts.

Rnd 25: (inc and cable crossing rnd) Rep Rnd 1—176 sts.

Rnds 26–28: Work 3 rnds even.

Rnd 29: (inc rnd) Rep Rnd 3—184 sts.

Rnds 30–32: Work 3 rnds even.

Rnds 33–48: Rep Rnds 25–32 two more times—216 sts; 62 sts each for back and front; 46 sts for each shoulder.

Cont even as established until piece measures about 14" (35.5 cm) from base of turtleneck, or 1¼" (3.2 cm) less than desired length.

Lower edging: Cont to cross cables every 8th rnd as before, work as foll: *P2, work 2/2RC as established, [p2, k2] 12 times, p2, work 2/2LC as established, p2, sl marker for end of back, work 2/2RC as established, [p2, k2] 9 times, p2, work 2/2LC as established, sl marker for end of right shoulder; rep from * once more for front and left shoulder. Cont even as established for 7 rnds. BO all sts in patt.

FINISHING

Weave in loose ends. Block lightly.
