Shoulder Cozy

Mari Lynn Patrick

Wraps come in all shapes and sizes. For this minimal shoulder-skimming wrap, Mari Lynn Patrick has used a soft, super-chunky yarn in a lofty, textured stitch pattern. She begins with a few stitches at the lower center back, then works back and forth to the neck, adding a few more stitches at the end of each row to create “wings” that wrap around to the front. To finish the edges, she picks up stitches around the entire circumference and works a simple ribbing that’s folded over and sewn in place. A vintage-look button adds a splash of pizzazz. Wear the wrap with the button in the center front or off to one side.

CO 1 st at beg of next 28 rows (adds a full 2-st patt rep to each side every 4 rows), working new sts into patt as soon as there are enough to do so—146 (166) sts; 61 rows completed, ending with Row 1 of patt; piece should measure about 12¼" (31 cm) from CO. Work even in patt for 7 (23) more rows, ending with Row 4 of patt—68 (84) rows completed; piece should measure about 13½ (16¾)" (34.5 [42.5] cm) from CO.

At beg of next RS row (Row 1 of patt), work buttonhole as foll: K1, BO 4 sts, knit to end. BO 6 sts at beg of next WS row, then BO 7 sts at beg of foll WS row. Rejoin yarn to sts for left side of neck with RS facing, ready to work a RS row. At neck edge (beg of RS rows) BO 6 sts 5 times, then BO 7 sts once.

FINISHING

Do not block.

Edging: With cir needle, RS facing, and beg at center back marker, pick up and knit 95 (117) sts along shaped edge to right front corner, 96 (106) sts across upper edge to left front corner, and 95 (117) sts from left front corner to center back—286 (340) sts total. Place marker (pm) and join for working in the rnd. Work k1, p1 rib for 6 rnds. BO all sts in patt. Fold edging in half to WS, and with yarn threaded on a tapestry needle, sew BO edge in place along pick-up row. Reinforce buttonhole opening, if desired, as foll: Separate a length of the main yarn in half. Using 2 of the original yarn’s 4 plies threaded on a tapestry needle, work buttonhole stitch (see Glossary, page 149) around buttonhole. Weave in loose ends. Sew button to left front opposite buttonhole.

Embellish a wrap with decorative buttons held in place with safety pins.
