Hands down, this is my daughter’s favorite design in the book, but any kitten lover will purr with delight when she sees this hat. With a built-in scarf and mittenlike pockets, an adorable bow and fun paw prints, it is no wonder that this hat is a favorite.

10 sts and 9 rows in hdc = 4" (10.2cm)
Magic Loop technique: See Stitch Glossary for details.
Ch 1 at beg of row does not count as a hdc.
Make ch 1 at beg of row loosely and pull to the height of a hdc.
Hat is worked flat and seamed to get its shape.
The hood is very forgiving in size, but to get a perfect fit with the scarf, measure from the center of the neck to the wrist and create the scarf, rows 19 (21) to 56 (60), to that length.
Row 1 (RS): Using the larger hook and MC, leave a long tail for seaming and ch 41 (51); hdc in second ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. (40 [50] sc)
Rows 2–18 (2–20): Ch 1; hdc in each st across. Turn.
Row 19 (21): Ch 1; hdc in first 16 (18) sts. Turn. (16 [18] hdc)
Row 20 (22): Ch 1; hdc in each st across. Turn.

Row 57 (61): Ch 1; hdc dec over first 2 sts, hdc in next 10 (12) sts, hdc dec over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 [14] hdc)
Row 58 (62): Ch 1; hdc dec over first 2 sts, hdc in next 8 (10) sts, hdc dec over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 [12] hdc)
Row 59 (63): Rep Row 20 (22).
Row 60 (64): Ch 1; 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 8 (10) sts, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (12 [14] hdc)
Row 61 (65): Ch 1; 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 10 (12) sts, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (14 [16] hdc)
Rows 62–81 (66–85): Rep Row 20 (22).
Rows 82–83 (86–87): Rep Rows 57 and 58 (61 and 62). Finish off leaving a long tail for seaming.
With WS facing, sk next 8 (14) sts on Row 20 (22). Join MC with a sl st to next st. Hdc in same st as joining and next 15 (17) sts. Turn. (16 [18] hdc)
Rep Rows 21–83 (23–87) of first side.
