Slouchy hats are the ultimate accessory: they add a touch of style all while hiding a bad hair day. This pattern will challenge you with construction techniques, but it is worth the time and effort involved. I’m positive you will love the outcome.

Bernat Cotton-ish (55% cotton, 45% acrylic; 282 yds/258m per 2.4 oz/70g ball) or similar light weight yarn in colors:

CROCHET THE HAT

Rnd 1: With MC and leaving a long tail, ch 100; sc in second ch from hook and each ch across. Being careful not to twist work, join with a sl st to first sc to form a lp. (99 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc); (4 dc, ch 1) in same st as joining. *[Sk next st, (dc, ch 1) in next st] 3 times. Sk next st, (dc5tog, ch 1) over next 5 sts, [sk next st, (dc, ch 1) in next st] 3 times. Sk next st, ** (5dc, ch 1) in next st. Rep from * around until 19 sts rem. Rep from * to ** one more time. Join with a sl st to third ch of beg ch-3.

Rnd 3: Ch 1; sc in same st as joining and each st and ch-1 sp around. Join with CC1 and a sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1; working in BL, sc in same st as joining and each st around. Join with CC2 and a sl st to first sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 1; working in BL, sc in same st as joining and each st around. Join with a sl st to first sc.

Rnd 6: Sl st in first 3 sts, rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 3.

Row 2: Ch 1; working in BL, sl st in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1; working in BL, sl st in each st across. Sl st to next sc on hat Rnd 38. Turn.

Rows 4–70 (4-75, 4-80): Rep Rows 2–3. Sl st last row of band to first row of band. Finish off.
