23. Lazarus

TOWNELEY 31

The story of Lazarus appears in all four cycles. Its importance lay in being a figure of the Resurrection. The Towneley version differs from the York and is thought to have been included after the separation. It falls into two parts: a presentation of the story of Christ’s actions up to the Raising of Lazarus, closely based on John 11 1–44; a long monologue by Lazarus, lyrical in nature, addressed to all men – to the extent that the rest of the characters are simply ignored. Whilst the first part is written in couplets, the monologue by Lazarus is written in stanzaic verse. It envisages with grim intensity the decay of the body and the inevitability of death.

The play was included near the end of the cycle; there is no clear reason for this. It would normally appear immediately before the Passion as one of the miracles of the Ministry, and as an anticipation of the Resurrection.
