CHAPTER 3

Paper, Tools, and Calculating Rates

Objectives

At the end of this chapter, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify the components of ECG paper, and be able to identify the amplitude and duration of these components (small blocks, large blocks, second markers, and calibration markers). (p 36)
  2. Calculate the amplitude and duration of waves and intervals based on the measurements obtained from the ECG paper. (p 36)
  3. Discuss the concept of temporal spacing. (pp 3638)
  4. Describe the use of calipers and ECG rulers in the evaluation of a rhythm strip or ECG. (pp 3841)
  5. Calculate the rate of a tracing on an ECG or rhythm strip accurately and efficiently using the various methods outlined in the text. (pp 4144)
