CREATIVE CONSIDERATIONS

There are so many different styles and variations you can apply to your string art to make it truly unique. Here are a few of my favorites.

Add a contrasting border. Sometimes a string color choice doesn’t “pop” against your board like you’d hoped. Adding a simple contrasting color border can really highlight the piece. Black or white string works well for this.

Mix string colors. The color variety in embroidery floss is vast, and wonderful effects can be made by layering different colors of string in the same pattern. You can change the string color at any time by knotting and cutting the old string (sealing the knot) and repeating the stringing process in your new color.

Experiment with nail options. Try using different types and finishes of nails. Copper weather-stripping nails are nice, as are longer brass and gold nails.

Embellish your board. If you get bored with just staining or painting your string art surface, try adding decoupage, where you glue decorative paper to the surface first. Once it’s dry, you can seal your board with your clear coat.

Fill around a pattern. A unique take on a string art pattern is to add a border of evenly spaced nails around your entire board and fill the space between the border and the pattern with string, instead of the pattern itself.

The Moon Memory Board project (page 34) uses inverted stringwork and a contrasting border.
