Most people seek advice from their friends, spouse, or coworkers on issues they are facing. But unless you want recommendations on a movie, that’s probably not the best group of people to ask for advice.
We have discussed how success leaves clues often in the form of people who have wisdom and experience they can share with you. Isn’t it smarter to seek out one of these people who’ve already been down the road you’re traveling? Make a list of the people you’d like to have mentor you—then ask them.
Many people have reached the pinnacle of their careers and are happy to impart what they’ve learned as a way to “give back” to their industry and the world. Make a commitment to identify three people you could ask to mentor you, then contact them with a specific request of an hour a month or an hour a quarter or a 15-minute call every few weeks.
